the spirit of christmas

MERRY CHRISTMAS!!

well, in the spirit of christmas, maguupdate ako. hehe.irrele xa pero kebs lang diba? hai ulit.

one week na ako dito sa bicol. i was so excited to go home kasi maxado nga akong nahagard. five chapters per meeting ba naman. may dala pa nga akong five chapters pauwi para basahin. but no, wla akong ginawa sa one week na yun kundi maglaro ng sims at lumamon ng marami. that's right, may idadami pa ang kinakain ko. hehe.

gumagaling na ako sa sims. super professionals na yung mga characters ko. may vice president na ng kumpanya. may senior officer ng army. may surgeon, top secret researcher, assistant professor, runway model, head chef, tv reporter, stage musician, mountain climber, animal acting coach, movie star, clown, bank robber at madami pa... hehe... ay may congresswoman din pala... hehe... ang galing kasi... you play god for few hours a day... diba? ganda nun... kaya mong sirain ang buhay ng iba (well, ang buhay ng simulated character mo)... hehe... kaya mo din siyang patayin o kaya parusahan... it feels so good that you can manipulate other people... no wonder why people kill just to be god... power makes this world go round and in fact, insane... does god have absolute power over us? does he determine our being just like me lording over sims? absolute power corrupts absolutely. do god corrupt then? with this overwhelming power, how can you not? it's not a matter of righteousness, right? how can you be kind when you have everything? hehe... ewan... wla na naman coherence and unity ang sinusulat ko... hehe..

pero diba? come to think of it. in this day that jesus was supposed to have been born, i can't help but wonder why did god chose to salvage us? is it because he really loves? or is it because he wants to see us suffer more? suffering makes us appreciate what we already have and thus making us a better person. but there's a limit to this positive end of a negative mean. is this day we celebrate a day to celebrate at all? this is the day that perhaps allows us to suffer even longer. this has perpetuated severe pain and agony to exist. and we celebrate it?

christmas. it is an event of the past that we continue to celebrate in the present and will be continued in the future. but is there actual validity to this kind of veneration? i don't know. i only celebrate it for the food and the reason to stay up late.

funny stuffs you least wanted to know... but hell, still funny...

this is just so hilarious that i have to share it with al of you guys. enjoy!! got it from friendster..

a]If you yelled for 8 years, 7 months and 6
days you
would have produced
enough sound energy to heat one cup of
coffee.
(Hardly seems worth it.)

b]If you farted consistently for 6 years and
9 months,
enough gas is
produced to create the energy of an
atomic bomb.
(Now that's more like it!)

c]The human heart creates enough

pumps out to the body to
squirt blood 30 feet.
(O.M.G.!)

d]A pig's orgasm lasts 30 minutes.
(In my next life, I want to be a pig.)

e]A cockroach will live nine days without
its head
before it starves to
death.
(Creepy!)
(I'm still not over the pig.)

f]Banging your head against a wall uses
150
calories an hour.
(Don't try this at home, at work..maybe)

g]The male praying mantis cannot
copulate while its

its body. The female initiates sex by
ripping the

("Honey, I'm home. What the.......?!")

h]The flea can jump 350 times its body
length. It's
like a human jumping
the length of a football field.
(30 minutes...lucky pig! Can you
imagine?)

i]The catfish has over 27,000 taste buds.
(What could be so tasty on the bottom of
a pond?)

j]Some lions mate over 50 times a day.
(I still want to be a pig in my next

k]Butterflies taste with their feet.
(Something I always wanted to know.)

l]The strongest muscle in the body is the
tongue.
(Hmmmmmmm.......)

m]Right-handed people live, on average,
nine years
longer than
left-handed people.
(If you're ambidextrous, do you split the

n]Elephants are the only animals that
cannot jump.
(Okay, so that would be a good thing.)

o]A cat's urine glows under a black light.
(I wonder who was paid to figure that out?)

p]An ostrich's eye is bigger than its brain.
(I know some people like that.)

q]Starfish have no brains.
(I know some people like that too.)

r]Polar bears are left-handed.
(If they switch, they'll live a lot longer.)

s]Humans and dolphins are the only
species that
have sex for pleasure.
(What about that pig??)

Now that you've smiled at least once, it's
your turn
to spread these
crazy facts and send this to someone you
want to
bring a smile to (maybe
even a chuckle)....
In other words,

closer

it's really been a while since i've visited this blog. i haven't because of several reasons. one is i'm too poor to really give time to write. my mom gives me an equivalent of a day's allowance back in manila for one week here in legazpi. so what can i do?
another reason perhaps is that i was not in the mood. there weren't anything to talk about. all i do is eat, sleep, lie in my bed, watch tv, lie in my bed watching tv, lie in bed eating, eating while sleeping, sleeping while watching tv. this is decadent living. i feel no emotional nor psychological growth while doing these bunch of shit. the only growth i feel is in my waistline. and it is growing faster than i can manage. and it is depressing. hehe,. not that i am not fat before. it is depressing that after this fattening summer, i still have to confront four more semesters being fat. hehe. pangit.
anyway, i'm here to talk about a movie i just watched. it was so good that i have to tell everyone about it. although it's been shown in manila like a month ago, i think it is still worth it for people who haven't seen the movie to watch it. 'closer' starring very brilliant hollywood stars julia roberts, jude law, natalie portman and clive owen portrays a very different impression on sex, truth and intimacy.
the movie is very frank. i never felt the movie to back away from the issues it tackle. very straightforward that after the movie you'll question your own honesty. the theme of the story is much elicited through the characters themselves.
jude law is dan wolf, an obituarist and a struggling novelist. his profession requires him to be euphemistic in his choice of words. he got too stuck in the idealism of his world that he forgot what is real in this world. he is the most rounded character in the film. Law himself described Dan as someone who is still in cocoon, still waiting to metamorphose. with his roller-coaster-like relationship with Alice, he blossoms and became confident of himself. he was able to finish a novel and later on pursue a love he thought was true. a chance of love with Anna.
Anna is played by the pretty woman herself, julia roberts. she is a successful photographer who in a photo shoot met dan. in a way, we can say that the tragic flaw, among a plenty of flaws, is her incapability to live her own life. she has made an art out of ordinary perhaps placid life of anyone. she has made beautiful things that are already ugly. it is also worthy noting that her life has been made out of the lives of others that she photographs. devious as she is, she still finds it very difficult to be able to express what's painfully real. especially about her love to Larry.
clive owen has played the dan before in the theater premier of closer. however, in the biog screen adaptation, he plays, larry. Larry is a dermatologist. in some ways, we can say that he is too hooked up with the physical beauty that he has forgotten the ugly monster inside of him, hungry for sex and attention. he got his heart broken initially when anna after a year of marriage decided for them to separate because of her secret affair with dan. he has compromised that love is painful and swore never to get hurt again. however, in his pursuit of painless love, he winds up hurting other people.
the last character of this twisted love quadrangle is alice. alice is an american stripper out to proove something. she hooks up with dan then later had sex with larry after dan dumped him. one thing, she is a stripper showing everything a customer wants without touching. however, the question lies on the mere fact that although she is a stripper, has all been shown? she adapts a name after meeting dan. does that mean another personality then? is she the true self that was jane jones? usually, a change of name and the physical appearance signifies a change of self just like how the girl in white oleander changes her hair and clothes as she changes foster home. who is alice ayirs then?
well, the moral of the story is easy. sometimes we just can't handle the truth. just like what ally mcbeal said, kindness is better than honesty. the happiest person in the world are the one's who knows to lie at the right moment. just as dan exclaimes "try lying for a change-it's the currency of the world" we must then not ask for the truth if we already know it would hurt us eventually. reality bites really hard. if we can't manage defending ourselves, we must not then face reality. we must just get stuck to idealism just like dan.
another thing, the movie talks straightforwardly of sex as if its just an ordinary thing. so casual. however, it doesn't talk of the carnal pleasure on would experience in sex. instead it leaves a sour aftertaste. we can't help but feel disgusted by the engaging in it. not too desirable. anyway, i will stop talking bout sex already.
well, i recommend it. closer is a must see. it is the story of the plight of people trying to get closer to the truth, to somebody else, to things we may never get a hold of. just like so many things in this fucked up world.

wahahah... cant think of a title.. again.

nyahaha... take home exam blues... images of a woman in the philippine society

According to the media and gender group, we can then say that Filipinas today still suffer oppression both at home and at work. The media group discussed about the implications on the images of women as portrayed in TV commercials. In such analysis, they have come into conclusions that women especially those of married women are still regarded as housewives. They are much associated with household chores like washing of clothes, cooking and taking care of the kids. Their images are still anchored to what we have already known to since the Spanish Period. And such image of a housewife is perpetuated continuously at present time by the media particularly on commercials.
It has been a common notion that the media holds a key role in influencing the public. And it is likewise undeniable that media is perhaps the strongest institution of socialization in the country. Through massive technological advancements, media has been so pervasive and ubiquitous in the country reaching people as far as the provinces. Almost everyone either watches television or listen to the radio. Although broadsheet seems to show some kind of elitist nature due to its preference for English, the masses enjoy print media more with tabloids due to its use of the Tagalog and that it is cheap. Aside from this reason, one could say that because of the weakening other institution that is perpetuating the power the media has. Education for example has been replaced by infotainment programs in teaching various concepts and fields. Religion in his role of keeping morality at bay has failed to do so. Although it is normal for a morality to change over time, the morality given out the media is so far out to what has been taught by the church. And church itself recognizes such power when it always castigates the media for irresponsibility and unaccountability to the public through pornography and violence rampant in the media today. We have been to posses such strong family ties. But in the recent years, family has disintegrated into becoming patches of its members. The rise of the concept of shadow families displays what has happened to the Filipino family. Lastly, the politics side of the society which is the government’s concern has come short in meeting what is expected of them to do. Like the other institutions, politics has become dysfunctional in that it declines in influencing the people. Loss of trust due to massive and normalized graft and corruption perhaps primarily have been a factor in all of this. And we may also associate it with their failure in providing the basic needs of the people.
Large-scale unemployment is one problem that the government hasn’t solved. In their part however, the government has tried many means to alleviate the lack of jobs in the country. They have formulated plans of action like granting seasonal and contractual jobs for many, call center jobs for the English proficient and what might have been present all along, promoting labor migration or working abroad. Feminization of this migration has been a trend since 1992 here in the country. Much of these women enter as service workers like caregivers and nurses in different parts of the globe mostly in highly industrialized nations.
Nevertheless, one may ask why has only 8 million people has chosen such path? There are more than 70 million who suffer the same economic state of poverty. According to the website of National Statistics Office, in December of 2004, the unemployment rate is 10.9%. In the face of these numbers, why do we still find people staying in the country instead of washing other people’s white buttocks in the USA or Canada. We may still see the colonial mentality of Filipinos setting in wherein we see most Western countries as greener pasture offering more opportunities.
So what does these issues implicate towards the views of women in our society. We can’t talk about women if we do not relate it to man. In some ways, the concept of a woman being the significant other or of lower status compare to the husband. Indeed, family is a sight for oppression. This occurs basically because the man in the relationship controls the power. Such power comes from him being able to earn for the family, being able to bring food on the dinning table. In this sense, we may see him as possessing the means of production which Marx sees as the source of power in society. In terms of this power relation, when such power is exercised in the family especially on the wife/mother, she has become subjugated and oppressed in the process. In this manner, we may see since the TV commercials showing such images are still perpetuated that Filipinas are still oppressed in the country although the Spanish occupation has ended. Furthermore, we still see women as housewives-to-be. Such perception persists on the assumption that women should only be then limited to house works. Household chores include taking care of the kids, cooking, shopping groceries and other menial tasks.
With this in mind, further study of the feminization of migration, we can say that in some ways this has become an empowerment brought about by resistance from the claws of patriarchy. They already earn for themselves and thus hold the means of production. They have gone beyond the limits of house. However, such resistance may still be seen as a sign of subjugation. The work they are hired in are extension still of their household chores. Caregivers and nurses are some of the example of these works. This entails that certain “taking care” duties are still vested on to women. This is less of empowerment than subjugation. And who is assuring us that these OFWs does not do household chores when they got home?
Women in general can be seen then more as the second sex or the significant other in the Philippine society. Although the image may have generally improved as compared to baro’t saya days of the Spanish Period, women now are still oppressed both at home and at work. And through this I know that it would take a lot of time before we can get over this kind of images or perception of women, definitely and especially when the media still enjoy its oligarchic nature.

peste.
